Trekking poles
Trekking poles evolved from ski poles and are designed to be used for walking. They do two things very well.
One is to help you develop a good walking rythmn. The second is to act as a handy stability aid particularly on uneven ground and when carrying a heavy pack. It's easier to balance when you can rely on a pole to stop you toppling sideways and they also work well on climbs and descents to aid balance and stability. In recent years trekking poles have become a real 'must pack' item because of their huge range of benefits. They can reduce weight on your hips and back by 7-11 kg per step, uphill walking is made easier as your arms help support your upper body and give extra support to your legs, down hill walking is less of a strain on the knees making long descents less of a challenge and when crossing streams or boggy ground, trekking poles are invaluable for judging depth and increasing stability.
